Kiowa Wildlife Management Area

This 540-acre area is designated a Nebraska Important Bird Area, and 326 acres are closed during the goose-hunting season as a refuge. There is a large diked pool at the east end and seasonal wetlands toward the west. A small prairie dog colony is present and Burrowing Owls are regular. Canada Geese nest here and about 20 waterfowl species have been reported, including large wintering goose and duck populations. Common migrant shorebirds include Baird’s, White-rumped, and Stilt Sandpipers. Nesting shorebirds include the American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, and likely Wilson’s Phalarope and Wilson’s Snipe. White-faced Ibis and Black-crowned Night-Herons may also nest here.

Where to go in the WMA

View birds from the observation deck at the parking area or explore by walking around the WMA. There are no trails or bathrooms here.
