Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center

This site is an 850-acre tallgrass prairie nature preserve owned by the National Audubon Society. With over 650 acres of native tallgrass prairie, this site is an excellent spot for viewing grassland birds, such as Henslow’s Sparrows and Bobolinks. There are also two small ponds and riparian woodlands that attract a variety of birds like Sedge Wrens and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. The visitor center has education displays and a gift shop. This site also offers a variety of educational events throughout the year including monthly birding outings. The trails are open dawn to dusk, but visit their website for more information on visitor center hours and events.

Where to go in the prairie

This site has several trails that crisscross and lead through a variety of habitats. Pick up a trail map at the visitor center or download it from their website. Listen and watch for Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Eastern Wood-Pewees, Baltimore Oriole, and Yellow Warblers along the Woodland Trail in late spring and early summer. During migration, listen for some difficult to detect grassland species like Sprague’s Pipit and Smith’s Longspur along the prairie trails. While hiking through the prairies listen for both Eastern and Western Meadowlarks.
